Anime Blamed for Suicides

Over the past two weeks in Russia, six kids have committed suicide. They apparently came from good homes. They did well in school. So why did they kill themselves?

Child psychologist Olga Makhovskaya thinks she knows: Japanese anime.

"Of course anime by itself cannot be the cause of teenage suicides," said Makhovskaya. "But it is a visual art that attracts many teenagers and that intensifies all their feelings. And death, the heroics of death that is typical of the Japanese culture a lot more than other cultures, often serves as a measure of friendship or loyalty."

"To jump down from a high-rise together holding each other's hand—it is specifically typical of girls' behavior," she added. "Heroic adventures of girls, stories of inseparable friendship between girls—these are all anime stories."

Continuing, the psychologist added that some Russian kids begin watching anime from as young as six years old. While she says anime by itself cannot be blamed, it sure sounds like that's what she's doing. Listen:

"It is a whole subculture that despite varying story lines and styles all romanticizes death. And one cannot exclude indirect influence," said the child psychologist, before commenting that anime "also erases borderline between reality and virtual culture. Sometimes virtual culture due to its graphic imagery appears to be brighter and richer than real life."

How the hell does it do that? Anime is anime. Reality is reality. If you cannot tell the difference, then perhaps you have issues that need to be addressed. And if it wasn't anime that caused you to blur real and fantasy, it would be something else: movies, books, or, yes, religion.

For Makhovskaya, teenage suicides all have one thing in common: "they don't realize that it is the absolute end and that there will be nothing afterwards. They don't understand how irreversible death is. In their minds it is really just a transition to some other world..." Isn't that what people who believe in heaven think? And not just Russian teenagers who are committing suicide?
No, what teenage suicides have in common is that the youth are troubled, and they need help dealing with issues that are enveloping and overtaking their entire being. Perhaps those good families aren't so good. Or maybe the teenagers have illnesses they need addressed.

But instead of talking about that, it's easier to point the finger at whatever kids are into: heavy metal, movies, video games, or here, Japanese cartoons. It trivializes the whole problem and enables to write off these tragic deaths and the country's high suicide rate as the result of Japanese cartoons.

When can we start blaming "experts" for stupidity? Now is as good a time as any, I say.

Noir

Finished another anime and this time it's on a anime called Noir. I really did enjoy this anime since it had some great people from past animation shows working on it. The plot is pretty good and it has music from the great Yuki Kajiura. Only downside is the start is a little slow, but the pacing gets better as the anime goes on.
Description:

Quote

The series follows the story of two young female assassins, the Corsican Mireille Bouquet and the Japanese amnesiac Yumura Kirika, who embark together on a personal journey to seek answers about mysteries concerning their past.
One Piece Manga Heist

There are 64 volumes of popular Japanese manga One Piece. Each copy is about half an inch thick and weighs 5.30 ounces. All 64 volumes stacked are over three feet high and weigh nearly 22 pounds. You'd be insane to try to steal all 64 volumes at once.
But that's exactly what one man did.

One evening on Dec. 23 last year, a 26-year-old man entered a Shizuoka Prefecture bookstore, carrying a large travel bag over his shoulder, reported the Yomiuri Shimbun. The two clerks working at the time thought he seemed suspicious, but, being a national holiday, the store was busy and packed with shoppers.

It was until the next morning that the staff noticed the damage: One Piece vol. 1 to vol. 64 were systematically swiped from the shelves. The staff checked the security camera, discovering the 26-year-old man filling his bag with the One Piece manga ten volumes at a time. The footage then showed him leaving the shop in a hurry, comics in tow.

The police were able to track the man down. On Jan. 17, he was arrested for shoplifting.

"I was planning to re-sell them", the young man apparently told the police. According to authorities, the value of all 64 volumes is the equivalent of ¥26,000 (US$340) retail. Used book stores would pay around ¥23,000 (US$300) for them.

"Even at a used bookstore, these could be sold quickly," explained a book retailer in Shizuoka City. "They're good as new, and even if the used book shop paid nearly full price, it would still turn a profit." Moreover, One Piece is the biggest manga in Japan at the moment, which not only makes it an easy sell, but an easy target.

At this same bookshop, copies of Hunter x Hunter as well as other comics were stolen during mid-December. Police are investigating whether this 26-year-old is behind those incidents.

While many items at "recycle shops" are sold by individuals who purchased them legally, it's not uncommon for stolen comic books an video games often end up on shelves—much like stolen items end up at pawn shops in the West. But here, the heist wasn't diamonds or stereo equipment, but comic books.

X-Men Anime

Another anime watched and this time it was an anime adaptation of the X-men. I must say it's pretty good, but it doesn't give a back story so you need to know your X-men or you will be lost and centers on a few characters. Being only 12 episodes long and no indication of a season 2, I say you should check it out.

Description:

Quote

Following the death of Jean Grey, the X-Men are reassembled by Professor X to travel to Japan following the abduction of Armor and face the U-Men who are abducting young mutants in order to harvest their organs.
Scrapped Princess

Another anime watched, and this time it was an anime called scrapped princess. It mainly deals about a young girl who was believed to be cursed when born and was suppose to be killed but lived. It turn out to be a decent anime, the animation was good, some good ost and the characters weren't half bad. Though I felt it was short and crammed somethings in.

Description:

Quote

The story takes place in a fantasy world and revolves around a 15-year-old girl named Pacifica Casull, the sister in a pair of twins born to the royal family of a kingdom called Leinwan who is, literally, thrown away. The 5111th Grendel Prophecy predicts that she will be the "poison that will destroy the world" if she reaches her sixteenth birthday. To prevent this she is dropped off a cliff as an infant ("scrapped"). Believed to be dead, her survival remains no more than a rumour until she is already 15 years old.
