Tales of Innocence R App

Namco Bandai Games released a smartphone application inspired by its Tales of Innocence R remake role-playing game on January 27. Tales of Innocence R Music Player plays eight songs from the PlayStation Vita game, which shipped in Japan on January 26.
The free application's users can listen to each song while viewing pictures and profiles for eight game characters. An included rhythm mini-game features the same songs and offers players the option to post their score on the Twitter website. The iOS application is available on Japan's iTunes Store for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices.

The Tales of Innocence R PS Vita game, which promises more than 60 hours of gameplay time, adds new anime cut scenes and the new characters QQ Selezneva and Conway Tau (Kenji Nojima). Unlike the original Nintendo DS game Tales of Innocence, voices have been recorded for the dialogue in all main story sequences, and players can use the PSP Vita's touch screen to direct party members during battle.

Angry Birds in Space

Those Angry Birds your aunt loves are being blasted into space. Rovio today put up a teaser site and a short video trumpeting the next appearance of the Angry Birds in Angry Birds Space. It will be out on March 22. Other than that, we don't know much.

I'm no scientist, but I have several problems with this idea. Number 1: If the birds were in outer space, there would be no gravity, meaning that the game's traditional focus on creating the correct trajectories to demolish pig structures would be meaningless. We know from Newton's first law that a bird flung into space with a slingshot would continue in a perfectly straight line until the end of time itself. -- so no graceful arcs. Also: There's no sound in space, so you wouldn't hear the delightful squawks you know and love.

Minecraft Makers "Bored" By Clones

Minecraft publisher Mojang says it is "bored" by clones of its hit game, adding that games like FortressCraft are "really sad".

Speaking to Eurogamer, Mojang's 'biz guy' Daniel Kaplan said, "I'm really bored by the clones. They don't bring anything new to the table which is really sad."

Although the games show significant similarities to Minecraft, created by Markus 'Notch' Persson, Kaplan said there will be no lawsuits. "As long as they don't use anything we made, we don't care. Like, would the Doom creators sue everybody who has done an FPS? Don't think so."

FortressCraft from Projector Games has been a major hit on Xbox Live Indie Games with sales estimated at over 600,000 on the back of a price of $2. It launched in April 2011. Mojang has plans to bring its game to XBLA later this year.

Notch has previously said, "FortressCraft is an obvious attempt to just take something popular and clone it as closely as possible. I still think it's important that people are allowed and able to do things like that, but it's hardly graceful."

He added, ""Both FortressCraft and Terraria appear to be inspired by Minecraft, which in turn was inspired by many other games, including Infiniminer, Dwarf Fortress, and Dungeon Keeper. However, I do not believe you can achieve something great or interesting by merely attempting to emulate something successful. It becomes especially embarrassing if you publicly deny any inspiration when it's painfully clear how much of a copy it is."

Are mobile(smartphone and tablet games) and internet flash games competitor to PC and game console games

No, I do not think mobile and internet games are a competitor to PC and console gaming, but they might make some people play fewer game consoles, gaming pcs, and disc based games since smart phone, tablet, and flash games might take up more of their time, and is good enough for their quick fixes when it comes to gaming on the go, or short gaming when waiting for someone somewhere like the mall, restaurant, etc.

Steam Hacking Update

Game company Valve has just sent more information about the hacking attacks against its Steam service.
According to Valve's president Gabe Newell: "It is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords."
Valve says it has no evidence that the information has been "compromised," so, presumably, the encryption is still in place. The company advises Steam users to "watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well."
The full text of Valve's email is under the "Read More" tag.

Quote

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users

We continue our investigation of last year's intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database but we found no evidence that the intruders took information from that database. That is still the case.

Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.

We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it's a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.

We are still investigating and working with law enforcement authorities. Some state laws require a more formal notice of this incident so some of you will get that notice, but we wanted to update everyone with this new information now.

WoW Loses More Subscribers

Activision Blizzard reports that on December 31, 2011, 10.2 million players were subscribed to World of Warcraft. This represents a drop in subscribers from the last report, where Activision Blizzard let investors and press know know World of Warcraft was down to 10.3 million. This is down from over 12 million subscribers around the time of Cataclysm's launch.

10.2 million is still an enormous number of subscribers, but represents a trend that World of Warcraft's subscriber base may have entered into a state of permanent decline.

Blizzard aims to change that with the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion, though it's interesting to note that WoW subscriptions continued to decline even after Mists was announced at BlizzCon 2011, the Hour of Twilight update was released, and the Annual Pass program was announced.

As of yet, Mists of Pandaria does not have a specific release date.
