Sony Working on its own Kinect?

A patent filed in late 2011, but which has only been published this month, reveals that Sony is working on its own version of Kinect, Microsoft's popular motion-sensing peripheral for the Xbox 360 (and now PC).

Of course, the argument could be made that Kinect was Microsoft's own version of Sony's EyeToy (indeed, this new patent directly references 2003 trademarks Sony owns), a camera released almost a decade ago on the PlayStation 2 (and updated for the PlayStation 3), but it's too nice a day here to get bogged down in that quagmire.

The patent is for a "USER-DRIVEN THREE-DIMENSIONAL INTERACTIVE GAMING ENVIRONMENT", which would involve plugging a camera into a PlayStation and using it to read both a player's movements and their positioning in a 3D space.
It was filed by none other than Richard Marks, the main man behind Sony's PlayStation Move peripheral.

Now, as with any other patent, remember this doesn't mean Sony will be releasing a 3D camera for the PS3 (or a future console). It just means the company is thinking about it.

Text with Vita

In a bit of strange news, 3G PlayStation Vitas can receive text messages. From the "System Information" section in the 3G Vita's Settings, a phone number is clearly visible. However, without the ability to dial out, IGN assumed the feature was just some kind of 3G orphan from AT&T -- calling the number is a dead end.

However, it turns out that the 3G Vita can receive text messages via that Settings phone number. The messages appear as "Notices from Operator" and are listed along with the sender's phone number. There is no way to respond to the texts.

Why do 3G PlayStation Vitas have phone numbers? What does the text messaging mean for future Vita apps? We've asked Sony for a comment and will update when a representative responds.
The top status bar for the Vita kinds of look like the Status bar on Google Android Gingerbread, and the Home screens scrolling kind of reminds me of Android Honeycomb and Gingerbread.

SDD Makes PS3 Run Faster

The Xbox 360 and Wii are, if you want to stay under warranty, locked entities. You can't upgrade them at all. The PS3, though, lets you swap out a hard drive, and with the coming of the age of solid state drives (SSD), this can result in big performance gains.

Running a series of tests across games using a standard PS3 hard drive, a hybrid drive (half regular drive, half SSD) and a Samsung SSD, tech specialists Digital Foundry have found that, depending on the game, there are some major improvements to be had in both a PS3 game's loading times and associated stuff.

RAGE, for example, looked way better, with much of its annoying texture pop-in resolved. Skyrim gets a big boost too, including a noticeable reduction in the "lag" that's been affecting PS3 owners of the game.

It's not a magic fix for all games, though. An SSD didn't do squat for Battlefield 3, nor Kingdoms of Amalur, and only made a slight difference to a range of other titles.

You can see the full run-down, including handy comparison vids, below.

Vita won't play PS2/3 Titles

The PlayStation Vita is out next week, on February 22. Yes, technically it's out as of earlier this week, but that's only for people who ordered the First Edition bundle. Next week, everyone can get their piece of the pie. Sony has a new Vita FAQ up on PlayStation Blog to get you prepped, and one of the Qs addressed reveals that "PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point."

The reasoning behind this should be fairly obvious, even if Sony never admits it: if games from those platforms are made to simply work with the Vita, how will anyone ever release Vita-tweaked "remakes" for them? Duh, guys. Seriously. PSOne support is coming, though there's nothing to reveal yet on that front. Sony pledges to announce further details "when they are ready."

Vita devs jumping ship?

The PlayStation Vita isn't even fully available worldwide yet, and Japan's Nikkei newspaper is already reporting its demise. Specifically, an anonymous source from the Japanese game industry told the paper that Japanese companies are abandoning their Vita projects in favor of developing for the 3DS. It's true that the 3DS has been routinely outselling the Vita in Japan (as has the aging PSP), but Sony's VP of Worldwide Studios Scott Rohde isn't buying into the panic.

Rohde told Gamasutra that "extremist quotes like that" aren't uncommon with a new product. Rohde believes the Nikkei story is exaggerated, noting that "there is no way anyone could stand in front of a camera and say that all developers are changing focus from one platform to another, no matter what it is." Indeed, it wasn't too long ago that many were writing eulogies for the 3DS, which has since gone on to sell 15 million units (although it wasn't able to prevent losses for Nintendo).

We're inclined to agree with Rohde, as it only makes sense that publishers would probably wait to judge the worldwide impact of the Vita before abandoning it entirely.

Vita Error Code C2-12383-7

The launch of any video game hardware is usually coupled with growing pains, and it appears the PlayStation Vita North American launch might have its first bump in the road. Early adopters now have the Sony handheld, and some are running into a major problem -- namely, the inability to install downloaded games.

Once a game is downloaded to the PlayStation Vita, it is then installed. Some are seeing the install fail and error code C2-12383-7 pop up. Attempting to copy the game from the PlayStation 3 to the Vita also brings up the error.

IGN has replicated the problem with Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, and IGN fans on Twitter are reporting the issue with Super Stardust Delta.
